As the holiday shopping season kicks off, Australian consumers are increasingly turning to AI-powered chatbots to help them navigate the festive frenzy. Zendesk’s 2024 Global Holiday Survey reveals that nearly a third of Australian shoppers are more open to using chatbots for their holiday shopping compared to the previous year.
Kellie Hackney, Country Leader, Australia and New Zealand, Zendesk says, “The holiday shopping season can be stressful for many as people search for the best deals and rush to complete their shopping. Consumers prefer brands that offer experiences that make shopping simpler, and help them get the best value. Many are embracing digital assistants like chatbots, seeking interactions that feel more human. They want to compare products, receive alternative suggestions, and get personalised recommendations whenever they need them. This approach provides a quick and easy shopping experience, ensuring they find great deals this holiday season.”
Younger and older shoppers alike seek AI assistance
The survey, conducted among over 1,000 Australian consumers, highlighted a significant shift in consumer behavior. Younger shoppers, aged 18-24, are leading the charge in chatbot adoption, with half of them likely to use a chatbot during the upcoming holidays. Surprisingly, older shoppers, aged 55 and above, are also embracing AI, citing its ability to help them find the best deals as a key reason for using chatbots.
The need for human touch in AI interactions
While AI-powered chatbots are gaining popularity, consumers still value human interaction. The survey found that 63% of respondents believe chatbots lack empathy and a personal touch. This presents a unique opportunity for retailers to enhance the customer experience by combining the efficiency of AI with the warmth of human interaction.
Personalisation is key to customer loyalty
Consumers are seeking personalisd experiences that cater to their unique needs and preferences. However, the survey revealed that current chatbot experiences often fall short of these expectations. Only 34% of respondents believe chatbots can understand their unique shopping needs, and only 37% believe they can provide personalized recommendations.
To drive customer loyalty, retailers must prioritize personalisation. By tailoring recommendations and offers to individual customers, businesses can create more engaging and satisfying shopping experiences.
Transparency and security are paramount
As AI becomes more integrated into the shopping experience, consumers are increasingly concerned about data privacy and security. The survey found that 68% of respondents have privacy concerns, and only 26% are comfortable with businesses storing their data for personalised chatbot assistance.
To build trust, retailers must be transparent about their data practices and prioritise security. By implementing robust data protection measures and communicating clearly with customers, businesses can alleviate privacy concerns and foster a more positive shopping experience.
Hackney concludes, “As retailers compete for consumer spending these holidays, Australians have been clear on their expectation for AI-enabled experiences that make their shopping experiences easier and quicker. Those retailers that can delight their customers at every step of the journey through personalised experiences will win their customer’s share of wallet and reap the rewards of stronger loyalty.”
By effectively leveraging AI-powered chatbots and prioritising personalisation and transparency, retailers can enhance the holiday shopping experience and drive customer loyalty.
