As Black Friday shopping starts in the coming, a looming delivery crisis threatens to dampen the festive cheer. New research from retail communications specialist Esendex has revealed a staggering 4,500 vacancies in the postal and delivery sector, raising concerns about potential delays.
The ‘Delivery Delays’ report found that critical roles like delivery drivers and picker-packers are in high demand, particularly in regional areas. The Northern Territory, with 34.8 job shortages per 100,000 residents, faces the highest risk. Western Australia, despite a significant number of vacancies, has a lower rate due to its vast population.
With online shopping surging 88% last Black Friday and e-commerce sales projected to exceed $46 billion this year, the pressure on delivery networks is immense. The National Road Transport Association has already flagged a 14.4% driver shortage across the trucking industry, adding to the strain.
Consumer expectations for fast and reliable delivery are sky-high. Sixty-seven percent of shoppers would switch retailers for faster shipping, while 63% value parcel tracking. Any delays could lead to significant customer dissatisfaction.
As the holiday season approaches, the looming driver shortage poses a significant challenge for businesses aiming to meet tight delivery deadlines. With Christmas driver vacancies also on the rise, the future of timely deliveries remains uncertain.
